Cross-referencing circuit breakers can unlock better pricing, faster availability, and solutions for discontinued parts — but only when done correctly. Here's how to find legitimate substitutes without compromising safety or code compliance.
Cross-referencing means identifying a breaker from one manufacturer that is functionally and physically equivalent to a breaker from another manufacturer. When done correctly, it's a legitimate procurement strategy. When done incorrectly, it creates code violations, voided warranties, and safety hazards.
Cross-referencing is appropriate for: standalone breakers in standard residential panels where the substitute is UL-listed as compatible; MRO replacements where the original part is discontinued; and cost optimization when multiple brands carry equivalent UL-listed products.
Cross-referencing is NOT appropriate for: breakers in manufacturer-specific equipment where the OEM specifies brand; critical industrial switchgear with specific coordination requirements; any application where a UL listing specifically names the original manufacturer.
The most important cross-reference constraint is panel compatibility. A breaker from Brand A almost never fits properly in a panel from Brand B. Panel bus bars have different geometries, clip systems, and spacing. Installing the wrong breaker in a panel can result in poor contact, arcing, or complete failure to interrupt a fault.
There are limited exceptions — some panels do accept listed compatible breakers from other manufacturers — but these must be specifically evaluated and UL-listed for cross-compatibility. Don't assume. Verify.
All major breaker manufacturers publish cross-reference guides that map their products to competitors'. These documents are typically found in the technical resources section of manufacturer websites. Eaton, Square D, Siemens, and ABB all publish them — and they're updated regularly as product lines change.
When using a cross-reference table, always verify: (1) the amp rating matches exactly, (2) the voltage rating meets or exceeds your application, (3) the interrupting capacity (kAIC) meets your requirements, (4) the number of poles is identical, and (5) the physical form factor is listed as compatible.
Square D has discontinued several older product lines over the years, including I-Line and some older QO variants. When you need a replacement for a discontinued Square D breaker, first check whether Square D itself has issued a successor part number — they often do. If not, check Eaton's cross-reference for an equivalent, and verify UL compatibility with your specific panel model.
Eaton's product lines include both the Cutler-Hammer (CH) and BR series for residential panels, plus a full line of commercial and industrial molded case breakers. Siemens and Square D maintain detailed cross-references to Eaton's catalog. For common residential amperage sizes (15A, 20A, 30A), cross-references are well-documented.
Zinsco and Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels present a unique challenge: these brands are no longer manufactured, and their breakers are considered unsafe by many electrical authorities. The appropriate solution is usually full panel replacement rather than breaker replacement. Some third-party manufacturers make drop-in breakers claiming compatibility, but these are controversial. Consult a licensed electrician before proceeding.

UL has an "Interchangeable" classification that allows listed breakers to be used in panelboards of different manufacturers when specifically tested and authorized. Look for the "IB" or "Classified" designation in the breaker's documentation. This is different from simply finding a breaker with matching specs — it means UL has specifically tested the combination.
Brands like Connecticut Electric and Murray manufacture breakers specifically classified as interchangeable with major panel manufacturers. These are a legitimate sourcing option when original-brand breakers are unavailable or significantly more expensive.
One of the most practical applications of cross-referencing is competitive sourcing. If you need 50 units of an Eaton BR230 and local supply houses are out of stock or quoting high, knowing that a Square D QO230 or Siemens Q230 may be code-compliant for your application lets you post an RFQ that accepts any of the three — immediately tripling your supplier pool.
When posting an RFQ, explicitly list acceptable equivalents: "BR230 or approved equivalent (QO230, Q230, or other UL-listed compatible for [panel model])." Suppliers with different inventory mixes can then respond with whatever they have in stock at the best price.
