MCCB vs MCB vs ACB: Circuit Breaker Types Explained

Not all circuit breakers are the same. MCB, MCCB, and ACB each serve distinct applications — and ordering the wrong type wastes time and money. Here is exactly what separates them.

MCB — Miniature Circuit Breaker

MCBs are the small, plug-in or DIN-rail mounted breakers you find in residential load centers and light commercial panelboards. They typically range from 1A to 125A and provide thermal-magnetic trip protection.

The "miniature" refers to physical size, not necessarily current capacity. A 100A MCB is still far smaller than an equivalent MCCB.

When to specify MCB: Use MCBs for residential load centers, lighting panels, small commercial branch circuits, and any application under 125A where a plug-in or DIN-rail form factor is acceptable.

MCCB — Molded Case Circuit Breaker

MCCBs are the workhorses of commercial and industrial electrical distribution. The "molded case" refers to the insulated housing that encases the operating mechanism, making them more robust than MCBs and capable of higher interrupting ratings.

Key advantages of MCCBs over MCBs include adjustable trip settings, higher fault current interrupting capacity, and availability in larger frame sizes up to 2500A. Many MCCBs support optional accessories such as shunt trips, auxiliary contacts, and under-voltage releases.

When to specify MCCB: Use MCCBs for commercial panelboards, motor control centers (MCCs), feeder circuits in industrial facilities, and anywhere between 15A and 2500A where higher interrupting capacity or adjustable trip settings are required.

ACB — Air Circuit Breaker

Air circuit breakers are open-frame devices where the arc extinguishing medium is air (as opposed to oil or SF6 in older designs). They handle the highest current levels — typically 400A to 6300A — and are installed in main switchgear lineup, large data center PDUs, and utility substation equipment.

ACBs are almost always fully electronically controlled, with programmable trip units that allow precise setting of overcurrent, short-time delay, ground fault, and zone selective interlocking parameters. They are available in drawout (removable) or fixed configurations.

When to specify ACB: Use ACBs as main breakers in large switchgear lineups, in high-rise buildings, hospitals, data centers, and industrial plants where fault currents exceed MCCB interrupting ratings or where drawout maintainability is required.

How to Choose the Right Type

  1. What is the maximum load current? This determines the frame size and rated ampacity.
  2. What is the available fault current? Your breaker's interrupting rating (kA) must exceed the available short-circuit current at the point of installation.
  3. What is the application? Residential panel → MCB. Motor control or feeder → MCCB. Main switchgear → ACB.
  4. What accessories are needed? Shunt trip, aux contacts, and under-voltage releases are typically available on MCCBs and ACBs, not MCBs.
